Your Dental Exams at Signature Dentistry of Rochester - Dr. Wolfe
Dr. Matthew Wolfe: When patients come in for their regular exam, there's numerous things that myself and our hygienists check for. One of the things we like to look for is gum disease. We want to make sure that people's gums are healthy. Unhealthy gums can lead to bone loss and bleeding gums, infections, and eventually loose and missing teeth. Also, a recent research has come out showing that some of the bacteria involved in gum disease is responsible for the plaque buildup in your arteries, causing heart attacks and strokes and things like that.
We also like to check for tooth decay, which people call cavities. If a cavity's caught small, it's easy to fix. The longer a cavity sits on the tooth, the more the tooth rots away and eventually that leads to major work such as root canals and maybe even taking the tooth out if the cavity gets bad enough.
We also like to check for oral cancer. I think oral cancer is one of the most important things that we check for. If there is an issue with oral cancer and it's caught early enough, the chances of survival are very great for the patient.
We also look for sleep apnea issues. If somebody's not getting the amount of oxygen they need while they're sleeping and their breathing's being disrupted, it can cause serious health problems throughout their lifetime.
And finally, we like to just make sure that people's bites are comfortable. Make sure that they're chewing properly, they're not having any issues with their teeth hurting or their joints or their muscles hurting when they're chewing and eating. So basically great home care, a smart diet, and regular checkup visits so we can make sure that all of these issues are working well for you, can ensure that you have a lifetime of healthy teeth.
