Best Candidates for Tooth Extraction

We usually don’t recommend a tooth extraction. However, we might recommend tooth extraction if a tooth:

  • Cannot be repaired
  • Threatens your oral health
  • Threatens your overall health
  • Interferes with optimal health and appearance

The recommendation might range from a slight preference to an urgent need, depending on the health of the tooth and your mouth.

In addition, sometimes patients might choose tooth extraction over other treatment options because an extraction is:

  • Less expensive
  • Less difficult
  • Faster
  • More certain

If we recommend an extraction or you choose one, we will discuss options for replacing your teeth. Tooth replacement options to consider are dental implants, dental bridges, and dentures.

Tooth Extraction Procedure

First, let us calm your concern: a tooth extraction is not especially painful. Most patients report that, overall, the discomfort is comparable to getting a filling. We take extra care to make sure all our patients are as comfortable as possible during and after an extraction.

During the procedure, we use local anesthesia to block pain. If you are worried about the procedure, or if you’ve had trouble getting numb in the past, sedation dentistry can help make you more comfortable.

Rochester Hills dentist, Dr. Wolfe, can perform simple or surgical extractions. In a simple extraction, Dr. Wolfe uses a dental tool called an elevator to ease the tooth out for removal. Sometimes he will section the tooth so it can be removed more easily.

In a surgical extraction, Dr. Wolfe makes an incision in your gums to make the extraction. After the extraction, he will suture your gums.
