Dr. Matthew Wolfe: Many people have heard of sleep apnea, but most people really don't know what it is. Sleep apnea is basically the closing of your airway, resulting in your inability to breathe while you're sleeping. Not being able to breathe means no oxygen getting into your body.

Signs of sleep apnea include snoring, not feeling well rested during the day, waking up gasping for air or coughing, and many times people with a larger neck may be more apt to have sleep apnea. Left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to some serious health issues, including weight gain, high blood pressure and, most importantly, heart attack. Sleep apnea is first treated by being diagnosed with a sleep study.

Treatment options include wearing a mouthpiece that moves your jaw forward in order to open up the airway while you sleep. Another option, for more serious cases, involves wearing a mask, known as a CPAP, which helps keep the airway open and forces air into your lungs while you're sleeping. If you feel you may suffer from sleep apnea, we highly recommend having a sleep study done. I've seen, firsthand, the life changes that can come about once somebody's sleep apnea has been properly treated.
